Stroller-Side Sumatra: Oren’s Daily Roast Brings it to Your Rig
Posted on 08.30.07 by joy @ 11.07am

Oh, the many times I subjugated my need for caffeine to avoid the dreaded stroller wheelie and door grab!! The BugaQuinStokke super strollers are heavy enough, but now that we have the Phil and Ted’s doppio: I relish ramps and automatic doors.

Well, Oren’s on 3rd Avenue, which I frequent daily, comes to the rescue with a dramatic, outdoor iced coffee delivery to a mom+2 in a Jane Powertwin (the Lincoln Towncar of strollers). I witnessed and actually applauded. Hooray Oren’s!

Quinny Buzz: 15 month update
Posted on 05.21.06 by joy @ 11.12am

The Buzz has been serving us now for 15 months.  It has gone from the sleapy, rear-facing, reclined infant days to the upright-sitting, barely holding him in, front facing mode.  A couple of quick notes:

The Good: We got the accessory storage basket (ebay) and it works great for quick shopping trips.  During snowy winter days, the Buzz’s rather large wheels managed the huge puddles and snow easily.  Now that we are more experienced parents, what originally seemed like a too small bag (the “Buzz box”) seems perfectly sized for regular outings.  It’s still a head-turner.

The Not-so Good: The creakiness is unacceptable for such an expensive piece of equipment.  It sounds like a 1985 Oldsmobile sometimes.  The front-wheel swivel mechanism catches too much dirt and dust too quickly.  I clean it out and it works well, but it needs to be sealed or something.

All in all, the Quinny Buzz is doing the job well.  I hear the new model addresses some of the wheel issues, which is great news.

Review: Quinny Zapp v. MacLaren Triumph
Posted on 10.04.05 by joy @ 2.48am
We had an episode with our Quinny Buzz some weeks ago. An episode that I am not very happy about or proud of: It involved a public bus, the free verbal ruminations of a bus operator and large tire marks on my pants. Homegirl and I realized immediately that we would need a stroller that was designed with portability as a slightly higher priority than the Buzz in order to move around Manhattan.

We had a MacLaren Triumph that was graciously given to us by friends. I had placed it on our baby registry after doing some research on better folding strollers and coming up with MacLaren (duh!). The Volo seemed too sparse; the Triumph seemed the right mix of comfort and portability. It was available in a (sort of) sophisticated midnight color, with a nicely upholstered seat and had a storage basket. I was sold. Of course, we could not use a “sit-up” stroller until 6 months after Zubin’s arrival which gave enough time for the arrival of the Quinny Zapp. (more…)

Quinny Buzz on Gizmodo
Posted on 09.13.05 by joy @ 9.56pm
Gizmodo has written up the Buzz as the technocrat’s choice in offspring mobility. They’ve also issued a challenge to US makers: make a dude’s stroller. A nice thought, but the marketing economics outside of the US coasts seem frail in the face of the puritanical separation of the sexes that persists in the heartland. And then there is the post-Sex in the City hyperfeminization of all things womanly; which probably means that marketing and branding baby products for men will have to wait. Sorry SAHDs.

On another note: Coming soon, Quinny Zapp vs. MacLaren Triumph. The battle of the foldable pocket rockets! A side-by-side comparison and photo pictorial.
