Paternity Leave: Umm…What’s that?
Posted on 01.30.07 by joy @ 9.17pm

As much I love the corrupt, pseudo-meritocracy that is the US of A, I am blown away by the lack of services for kids. The choice to have a child and supply this country with a fresh batch of tax-payers seems like a “you scratch my back, and I’ll…blah, blah” type of affair. Someone should break us off some for creating a pipeline of revenue for the government. What if our kids are pulling 7 or 8 figures, that’s alot of dough annually to the Fed.

Seriously, the least they could do for families with TWO working parents and more than one kid, is to give Dad’s some paid time off to help out and not risk the paycheck. We are lucky that we have the NYCFamily from both sides and NYCAunt (my sister) to help out, but it got me thinking about folks who don’t. So I asked my workplace management and got a lame voicemail in response. After talking to friends in France and the UK where paternity leave is assumed, we need to re-look at things and consider where our priorities are. Here’s an excerpt from the WSJ:

In the U.S., just 13% of employers that the nonprofit Families and Work Institute queried in a 2005 survey said they offer any paid paternity leave to U.S. workers (moms generally qualify for disability pay). That number shows little sign of increasing. Indeed, the sad reality is that the decision to take a parental leave often comes down to whether you can afford it.

So, when a buddy of mine who sent a photo of his newborn daughter to my blackberry from the hospital last week, showed up at work today, I’m not surprised.

Anyone know what happened to the reel moms program at AMC movie theaters?  Can’t find anything anywhere about it.

Being an NYCDad: Books of Wonder Storytime
Posted on 01.14.07 by joy @ 5.12pm

One of the great things about raising your kid(s) in Manhattan is that you have access to a broad range of kids activities. Kids activities are lame and stupid for adults, but if you aren’t going to the same Gymboree class every time the variety makes things much more digestible. Also, some of the settings for the kids activities are not as “parent-unfriendly” as a typical Gymboree is (now there’s something to think about).

Zubin’s regular Sunday afternoon activity is reading time and Books of Wonder. Now all the chain bookstores and libraries have reading times which are great for the kids, but this particular one makes it interesting for adults. B o W is a stand alone store (originally independent, now owned by HarperCollins) which only sells children’s books from birth to adolescence. It’s decorated with cool artwork by local artists based on fairy tales and fantasy books. It also carries costly, original editions of classics “teen reading” like Hardy Boys (clearly not for the MySpace gen). It’s a great space that takes this stuff seriously — $45 pop-up books for “kids of all ages”.Books of Wonder

The “reader” Elena Bloom is an astonishingly patient talent who turns what a librarian could execute satisfactorily into one-man re-enactments. She also does a great “Old MacDonald” to loosen up the crowd, gamely fielding the esoteric requests imitations of walruses and unicorns (!).

The parents can chill out and network with other relatively hip breeders (although the crowds growing these days). There’s one of those cupcake specialty cafes in the store, although seems like some of the parents are renting it out for birthday parties.

12.00pm on Sundays. Books of Wonder, 16 West 18th Street.
