Vacations

Being a parent changes alot of things.  More so than anything I have ever encountered.  I thought early on that getting married would be a big change, but it turned out to be not to jarring.  This fatherhood thing on the other hand has been a kick in the pants.

Recently I met a friend who’s wife is expecting their first very soon.  When I asked him how he was feeling, he leaned over and looked at me very seriously and said

I really hope things don’t change too much.  We used to have so much fun…

I just looked and smiled at him and then raised my glass to toast his good luck and celebrate the hope of the innocent.

Seriously, we have been trying to plan a vacation now for some time.  Homegirl and I used to be real adventure vacation types.  Here is a list of things we used to do that we cannot with the NYCKID:

  • -Drink on plane to celebrate our journey to some great destination
  • -Show up in foreign countries without reservations
  • -Take a commercial jet to a major city and upon landing, promptly board microscopic propeller jet (one of us seated next to an aging pilot of questionable pedigree) which will take us to an “unspoiled” area.
  • -Get drunk
  • -Any activity after 8.00pm, including having a drink

So as you can see, our vacation metrics have been recalibrated significantly.  I find myself considering options like cruises, all-inclusive resorts and Lake George!  Used to be that when someone would put one of these package deals out as a suggestion, NYCWIFE and I would nod politely and then recap that evening in bed with expert vocal impressions and riotous laughing before watching Letterman. Well, now look at us.  Cape Cod is as exotic as it gets for a short trip.  Used be a quick jaunt to Paris for dinner and shopping on the Champs.  Lake George here we come.

  1. Hey NYCDAD. This is my first time commenting on your website. I took a look around. Nice place you have here.

Anyway, my wife April and I are expecting our first in the next two months, and I’ve been thinking a lot about how our lives will change too when we have a little one around.

Just like you, we love to travel, especially when we need a break from work. Since we live in Spain, we’ll usually just pick a new city to see and go for the weekend. These weekends have been some of the best times in my life.

I very rarely hear anyone complain about having a little baby in the house, but I’m almost certain the kind of traveling we’ve done in the past is coming to end. For starters, we haven’t taken one of these weekend trips since we’ve been pregnant. I’m positive we won’t now that the baby could be born very soon. I suppose we’re in the process of reinventing ourselves in a way, finding new ways to relax and have fun with the new addition to the family.
