Pretentious Pediatrics
Posted on 07.31.06 by joy @ 10.10am

Zubin woke up at 4.00am a few days ago with a fever and cough. The cough (which we later found out is referred to as the medieval-sounding “croup”) was kind of a bell like ringing, very unusual and scary sounding. Later that morning we called the pediatrician’s office and had them page the doctor. She called us back soon afterwards and the conversation was as follows:

NYCD: Doctor, thanks for calling us. Zubin’s woke up with a fever and cough. Sounds kind of like a barking or ringing cough.

Doc: Is he eating and drinking? Is he playful? Does he have any other noticeable problems?

NYCD: He seems alright with food and his temperament is pretty good, playful as usual.

Doc: Ok…Well he has a cold.

NYCD: Should we give him anything?

Doc: You can give him some Tylenol for the fever, but no emergency room no matter how high the fever goes there is no emergency.

NYCD: Umm…Anything for the cough?

Doc: No, it should go away on its own. He has a cold. And the fever will not cause any brain damage.

NYCD: What?

Doc: Yeah don’t call us until Monday and if he still has a fever bring him in then.

NYCD: And is there anything to take for condescending pediatricians?

Doc: What?

NYCD: Thanks.

Look, I know it sucks to get called on a Friday for what must be another boring case of blah, blah, blah. You chose your career laden with runny noses, “croup” and frantic parents. Suck it up and at least try to sound interested.
NB: The doctors in the practice are by and large the best we have seen. This one of three that happened to be on call that day, well…she sucks. Thankfully the other two are so good that on balance the practice is great.

Zubin is a TV Star!
Posted on 07.22.06 by joy @ 12.12pm

Zubin on ReutersReuters recently did a piece on kids learning sign language (note to self: remove Reuters from “timely reporting and relevant” list). Check it out on the Reuters website.
The story was picked up by some local tv stations. I suppose in areas where signing with kids is new-fangled way to treat the yung ‘uns.

Vacations
Posted on 07.13.06 by joy @ 9.42pm

Being a parent changes alot of things.  More so than anything I have ever encountered.  I thought early on that getting married would be a big change, but it turned out to be not to jarring.  This fatherhood thing on the other hand has been a kick in the pants.

Recently I met a friend who’s wife is expecting their first very soon.  When I asked him how he was feeling, he leaned over and looked at me very seriously and said

I really hope things don’t change too much.  We used to have so much fun…

I just looked and smiled at him and then raised my glass to toast his good luck and celebrate the hope of the innocent.

Seriously, we have been trying to plan a vacation now for some time.  Homegirl and I used to be real adventure vacation types.  Here is a list of things we used to do that we cannot with the NYCKID:

  • -Drink on plane to celebrate our journey to some great destination
  • -Show up in foreign countries without reservations
  • -Take a commercial jet to a major city and upon landing, promptly board microscopic propeller jet (one of us seated next to an aging pilot of questionable pedigree) which will take us to an “unspoiled” area.
  • -Get drunk
  • -Any activity after 8.00pm, including having a drink

So as you can see, our vacation metrics have been recalibrated significantly.  I find myself considering options like cruises, all-inclusive resorts and Lake George!  Used to be that when someone would put one of these package deals out as a suggestion, NYCWIFE and I would nod politely and then recap that evening in bed with expert vocal impressions and riotous laughing before watching Letterman. Well, now look at us.  Cape Cod is as exotic as it gets for a short trip.  Used be a quick jaunt to Paris for dinner and shopping on the Champs.  Lake George here we come.
