Zubin just spent the last few days ignoring his $$$ worth of toys and opting to play with the empty box of our new humidifier. Turn away from him for a second and he starts sliding across the room to the box, laughing the entire way. Makes my weekly “new toy” trips to Buy Buy Baby seem kind of silly.
A fellow blogger recently posted about the cost of raising daughters and the various goods and services marketed to them. Homegirl was also schooling me on the latest MTV series “Sweet 16s” that she finds so side splittingly funny that she had to call her brother in California when she saw it last. It reminded me of an episode that took place about 3 years ago: M and I had just got married and we had invited the one and only couple we were friends with over to our apartment. They brought their 2 kids with them. Our first company under 4 feet tall. Upon entry, the older of the two sons who was 6 or 7, did a round of the apartment. 650 square feet, and he begins a thorough examination of everything. My friends/his parents non-chalantly proceed to open bottles of wine, saying he’ll be fine (wifey and I are freaking: “what can he play with? We’re never having kids right?”). About 10 minutes later, I notice that the search mission has been aborted and peer over the couch to see what is up. I watch him open up a flat box. We were in the midst of receiving our shipped wedding gifts (no boxes accepted at the reception, the way to go) and had an empty flat box leaning against the wall, waiting for recycling. He takes out two styrofoam packing pieces. He smashes them together. He then looked up at me and in the most approving tone of voice I have heard from any person to date, said: “Just what I was looking for.” Sons. The economy offspring. So after 8 and half months of laying, sitting and rolling around, Zubin decided to get off of his padded little butt and add moving around to his repertoire. He started doing that wounded soldier, drag his body around crawl to get to the outer ring of toys. He also employs this technique to locate and examine stray carpet fuzz in his vicinity (remarkably, this is the only thing he finds on the floor that he does not try to eat. Kryptonite perhaps?) He can also pull himself up to a standing position from sitting. I haven’t thought much of this because he can’t sit up from the lying down position yet. Yet. Let’s see, crawl, sit-up and climb. Oh! So this is where dad keeps his Video iPod. This is all quite alarming. Filed under: Parenting 101 Comments: None Related Posts:

For the last week, we have been using a different type of diaper for the Z-unit. In the midst of this freakish rain in NYC, I sloshed over to our local supermarket and could not find his normal #3 Cruisers. So, instead for the same price I brought home the Huggies “Supreme” variety which seemed to be positioned at the top of the Huggies product family and could give the old standard a run for the money. Based on the experiences in the last three days, let me just extend my hearty congratulations to Proctor and Gamble Incorporated, because the competition ain’t got nothin’ on them. The last three days have been fraught with leaks overnight and just a rather noticeably greater number of really full diapers. So the Huggies are wetter, heavier, thicker and bulkier. My educated guess, is that it all adds up to just plain uncomfortable for Zubin’s “boys” down there. I can just imagine the marketing copy now: Pampers Cruisers…the man’s diaper. We had a MacLaren Triumph that was graciously given to us by friends. I had placed it on our baby registry after doing some research on better folding strollers and coming up with MacLaren (duh!). The Volo seemed too sparse; the Triumph seemed the right mix of comfort and portability. It was available in a (sort of) sophisticated midnight color, with a nicely upholstered seat and had a storage basket. I was sold. Of course, we could not use a “sit-up” stroller until 6 months after Zubin’s arrival which gave enough time for the arrival of the Quinny Zapp. (more…) Filed under: Strollers and Gear and Parenting 101 Comments: None Related Posts:

So, it seems the good folks at Quinny have responded to the most common complaint about their flagship product. They have suspended a triangular bit of fabric from the three wheels of the Buzz and dubbed it the “shopping basket”. Amazingly, they have not bundled it with the new Buzz package, and are selling it and a new rather funny looking parasol as separate items. We use the Bugaboo parasol, which happens to fit perfectly on the Quinny Buzz frame and looks better than the scalloped edge thing they have made available.
